Who we are

At Rooted in Writing, we believe that every child is a storyteller—and that writing begins long before a pencil meets paper. Our mission is to nurture the foundations of joyful, confident writing through hands-on, heart-centered experiences that grow with your child.

Each month, we deliver a thoughtfully designed box full of tools, activities, and ideas that support writing development from the roots up. Whether your child is learning to form letters, exploring phonics, or writing their first stories, our boxes meet them where they are—with creativity, playfulness, and intention.

We draw inspiration from the Waldorf approach and the latest in child development and neuroscience. That means your child’s learning isn’t rushed—it's guided by rhythm, movement, imagination, and connection. And you're never on your own—we include simple tips and resources to help you support your child’s journey with confidence.

Writing isn’t just an academic skill—it’s a form of expression, a way to make sense of the world, and a practice that strengthens both hand and mind. We’re here to help you plant those seeds early—so your child can grow into a strong, expressive writer who loves to learn.

Come grow with us.

Meet the Founder

I'm Erin Moffet, the founder of Rooted in Writing, and an educator with over 20 years of experience in early childhood education. Over the years, I've had the privilege of working in a wide variety of settings—private and public schools, virtual classrooms, and, most recently, supporting homeschooling families through an independent study charter school. I've worked with children from all walks of life, including many neurodiverse learners, and I've always been drawn to creating environments where all students feel capable, confident, and curious.

Early in my teaching career, I became increasingly disheartened by what I saw happening to writing instruction in many public school settings. Rigid, developmentally inappropriate expectations were becoming the norm, with young children being asked to produce work that didn’t match their natural stages of growth. The joy and creativity that should be at the heart of writing were being lost. During the pandemic, I made the difficult decision to leave the traditional classroom and pursue a new path—one that would let me honor children’s developmental needs and nurture a love of language on their own terms.

When I stepped into the world of independent study and homeschooling, I expected to see more freedom and creativity in how children approached writing. But I was surprised to find that many students weren’t writing much at all. It wasn’t for lack of interest—it was often a lack of resources, guidance, or simply not knowing where to begin. I saw an opportunity to help.

As an alum of the San Marcos Writing Project, part of the National Writing Project network, I’ve long believed in the power of writing to transform not just academic achievement, but personal identity and confidence. I also know that early writing experiences—especially those that involve the hands-on, sensory act of handwriting—are essential for building fine motor strength and neurological connections. Handwriting is an art form, one we’re dangerously close to losing in the digital age.

That’s why I created Rooted in Writing. I wanted to offer families a practical, beautiful way to support writing at home. A subscription box model felt like the perfect fit—something that would be both convenient and inspiring. Each box is thoughtfully designed to meet children where they are, with high-quality materials, gentle guidance, and open-ended prompts that invite imagination, connection, and confidence.

This project is more than just a business—it's a response to everything I’ve witnessed and learned over two decades in education. It’s my way of returning to what matters most: nurturing the roots of writing, one child at a time.
