Who we are

At Rooted in Writing, we believe every child is a storyteller — and that writing begins long before a pencil meets paper.

We create monthly activity boxes for children ages 3–6 that build the fine motor skills, early literacy foundations, & writing confidence they need — through hands-on, screen-free play. Each box includes a carefully chosen picture book & all the materials needed to explore that month's theme. No prep, no extra supplies, no guesswork.

We're guided by what child development research actually tells us: that young children learn best through movement, imagination, & meaningful connection — not worksheets or drills. Our activities are designed to meet children exactly where they are, at their own pace, in their own way.

Because writing isn't just an academic skill. It's how children make sense of the world, tell their stories, & find their voice. We're here to help you plant those seeds early — so they can take root & grow.

Meet the Founder

I'm Erin Moffet — an early childhood educator with over 20 years of experience & an alum of the San Marcos Writing Project, part of the National Writing Project network.

Over the course of my career, I've worked across an unusually wide range of settings: private & public schools, virtual classrooms, & most recently, an independent study charter school supporting homeschooling families. I've had the privilege of working with children from all walks of life — including many neurodiverse learners — & I've always been most drawn to creating spaces where every child feels capable, confident, & curious.

Early in my teaching career, I started noticing something that troubled me. In many public school settings, writing instruction had become rigid & developmentally misaligned — young children pushed toward outcomes that didn't match where they actually were. The joy & creativity that should be at the heart of writing were quietly disappearing. During the pandemic, I made the difficult decision to leave the traditional classroom. I needed to find a path that would let me honor how children actually develop.

When I moved into independent study & homeschooling support, I expected to find more freedom in how families approached writing. What I found instead surprised me. Many children weren't writing much at all — not because they lacked interest, but because families lacked resources, guidance, or simply a place to start. That gap felt like an invitation.

As a National Writing Project alum, I've long believed that writing transforms not just academic achievement, but personal identity & confidence. I also know that the early, hands-on experience of handwriting — the physical act of making marks on paper — builds fine motor strength & neurological connections that matter far beyond the page. Handwriting is an art form, one we're dangerously close to losing in the digital age.

That's why I created Rooted in Writing. I wanted to give families a practical, beautiful way to support writing at home — something that feels both convenient & inspiring. Each box is designed to meet children where they are, with high-quality materials, open-ended prompts, & gentle guidance that invites imagination, connection, & confidence.

This is more than a business. It's a response to everything I've witnessed & learned over two decades in education. It's my way of returning to what matters most: nurturing the roots of writing, one child at a time.
